NFL Greatest Follies Vol 3

NFL FILMS - home of the Frozen Tundra, America’s Team, and the Championship Chase - presents all the stuff that didn’t quite make it into those highlight films. The NFL’s Greatest Follies: Volume 3 doesn’t capture moments in time - it releases them into the wild and then speeds away before they can get back in the car. Featuring two programs full of slips, drops, and utter madness, The NFL’s Greatest Follies: Volume 3 provides, for the first time, answers to these and so many more long-pondered questions: -Who has a rougher job - mascots or referees? -What would you give for your favorite uniform number? -Do those tailgating maniacs have jobs or do they live in the stadium parking lot? -And (of course) what happens when players have to go to the bathroom during a game? The NFL’s Greatest Follies is a two-disc DVD set containing the wildest, weirdest, wackiest moments you’ve never seen on Sunday afternoons. Produced by those madcaps at NFL Films, the NFL’s Greatest Follies is a must for any football fan, just as long as they don’t mind their players being a tad silly.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Funniest yet
I bought this long ago, and wasn’t aware I could write a review on it here on Amazon.

The dvd is funny. I myself am a huge follies fan. I have all of the videos, and now I’m happy to start collecting the dvds.

Now, don’t buy this dvd if you don’t like some corny jokes, and cartoony sound effects, because that’s pretty much all that this dvd has. It’s a good movie to watch with your kid (if the kid is about 10 or 11).

I felt it was worth the money since it had two follies programs on the disc. If you don’t ant to buy it, I think it’s at least worth a rent.

4 Stars MODERN FOLLIES
I’d score slightly higher than the other rater, but admittedly the liner notes on the back of this DVD suck. You get no clue as to what’s inside, and so you may be disappointed if you buy one, on faith, off the shelf.

Anyway, here’s the deal with Volume #3. There’s two full-length follies programs, produced by NFL Films. There’s no bonus material.

1. Legends of the Follies

(title is a take off on “Legends of the Fall”)

2. Follies: The Next Generation

Both films are 21st Century versions of the popular and long-running Follies series, which began in the late 1960s.

If you’re a Football Follies fan, you’ll enjoy. I am, and I do. But I wish there were bonus material, like another edition of “Lost Treasures” series, included on other recent NFL Films DVDs.

1 Star Football Follies Forget It
This DVD is boring. I bought it hoping for some cool bloopers. No luck. Also, do not purchase it if you plan to watch it with children. There is inappropriate language. Even though the words are bleeped out; it doesn’t take a lot to figure out what they are saying.

12 Disc Set : Ferocious. There has been no team before, and no team after, that was quite like the 1985 Chicago Bears. It was that kind of season. On offense, the Bears would slam Walter Payton at you until you broke and then they?d go long to speedster Willie Gault down the sideline. No where to run. No where to hide. For the first time, 12 of the original network television broadcasts from the Bears 1985 season are available in this exclusive box set. 5 Stars Steelers 33, Cardnials 14, you heard it here first.
Though he’s setting a serious and sober tone, many of us are still basking in the excitement of having Barack Obama in the White House. And with the Super Bowl coming up Sunday, minus any of my teams, it is the perfect time to reflect and another era, when another hero sauntered out of the Windy City. A man perfect for the place and perfect for the times. Back during one of the stretchier stretches of the never-ending Reagan years, that lovable 350 pounder known as The Fridge became the mascot of the greatest defense ever to play football. Never before or since has any single individual more perfectly embodied Maslovian self-actualization. Grotesque yet beautiful, deadly yet innocent, a world-class sensualist, hard-working yet fun-loving.

With a path through Chicago, Denver, and now Boston- all during the better runs of their football teams- I have no right to complain about not having a team in the big game. At least I’ll have Kurt Warner to cheer against this Sunday, what with that annoyingly unshakable faith that an invisible man in the sky wants him to win more football games than other people. But up until the last games of the last week of the regular season, the possibility was there that the Bears, Broncos, and Patriots would all be playing in the post-season this year. And, then, in just a few hours, all hope vanished.

But I’ll always have the ‘85 Bears. This is a pretty cool DVD set and a must for any Bears fan old enough to remember the season. You get most of the games, including all the really fun ones, from start to finish as they were broadcast originally. You high-resolution weenies should skip this product; the games are restored from old video tapes. They look fine to me. The dated look just adds to the charm.

The amazing thing is watching these games and actually remembering watching them the first time, remembering where I was and who was with me at each moment. The game in which Dallas loses 44 to 0 contains a Walter Payton run, sweep around the right side, legs kicking out to the side and he seemingly changed directions numerous times in mid-air, without losing any speed. The Dallas defenders crumble in demoralized heaps around him. Tom Landry paces the side-line wearing that prohibition-era fedora. John Madden is at his best, making sure all viewers understand the significance of this game and this season. I remember that run blowing my mind when it first happened, and just how good and how promising it all felt. I could go on and on, there were so many great moments during that year, but you get the point. Anyway, bet TAILS on the coin toss, Stealer’s to score at least once defensively, and a final score of Stealer’s 33, Cardinals 14.

4 Stars 1985 bears dvd
Great DVD package. Would have liked to have games 2-8-9-10 but can’t be to picky. You get a lot here for your money. All Bears fans will be pleased with this. They could perhaps do another box set with the remaining games, super bowl shuffle,Chicago Bears complete history, and America;s game! I will definately buy a future release of these. FANTASTIC! slpoutdoorsman (Sean)

5 Stars Great collection for Bears fans
For over 20 years, the only souvenirs I had of the Bears 1985 season was a VHS tape of the Super Bowl and a SuperBowl XX jacket in my closet. I’ve been waiting for a DVD set like this for a long time.

There are some minor glitches from time to time due to the original storage media, and there are a couple of rough cuts between snaps where they cut off the sports announcers. However, I’m still very happy with the entire set of DVD’s. They only have nine out of the sixteen regular season games (plus three playoff games) but they include most of the best games: the Minnesota come-back game, the 49ers game, the Redskins and Cowboys routs, and the Monday night Green Bay game featuring William Perry’s TD.

It would be great if they did a deluxe edition that had commentary, extra features, interviews, but being able to see these games again in their entirety is more than worth the price. I bought the set because I missed the Minnesota and Miami games that season, because I wanted a permanent copy of SuperBowl XX, and because I wanted another look at the 46 defense now that 20 years has passed.

It’s a great set - I’ve been recommending it to all of my friends.

5 Stars Great buy!
Awesome… simply awesome. I purchased this a few days ago and just received it today. I watched the first game and was blown away by the quality… very good transformation from the original broadcast to DVD… GOOD JOB! Very watchable, very entertaining - DEFINITELY A GREAT BUY! OH, AND ALSO FOR THIS PRICE (33.99 SALE)!

5 Stars “We’re just here to do The Super Bowl Shuffle!”
It’s unlikely there will ever be another team like the 1985 Chicago Bears, who were unquestionably one of the greatest teams in NFL history. Their defense was as good a defense as you’ll ever see. They also had a very capable offense, led by the eccentric Jim McMahon.

Almost all of these games are excellent quality in both video and audio. There are some exceptions. One of them being the Dallas game which appears to have been someone’s VHS recording of the game. It was taken from a feed in Wheeling, WV as the pop-up screen graphic during the game will tell you. Also, the regular season finale against Detroit starts off with an awful picture, but it does improve from the second quarter on. Finally, towards the end of the Super Bowl the color gets darker and the post-game interviews are mostly terrible video.

Something I noticed watching these games was the amount of late hits, a lot of which weren’t called. That would never happen today.

One more unrelated thing, before one of the games which was a Monday Night game Frank Gifford congratulates O.J. Simpson and his wife Nicole on the birth of their daughter Sydney. I certainly found that eerie.

Overall, this is without question a recommended purchase for Bears fans and NFL fans.

NFL History of the New England Patriots

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Great!
The DVD came in a timely manner and it was an awesome gift to give.

5 Stars Patriots fans sit back & enjoy the nostalgia!
I havn’t been around on this earth long enough to witness most of the years of the New England Patriots, but fortunately during my lifetime I’m able to enjoy the greatest era of the team’s legacy! It’s amazing to think that for many years the Patriots were a team that nobody thought much of but of course now that has all changed but it’s GREAT to look back with this DVD set on how the Pats were born & how they’ve evolved over the years. And by no means does this seem like a quick summary, there is quite a lot of info not only describing the many seasons, but also a lot of detail to key games & moments, players, coaches, not only explained narratively but also from the lips of the players & personnel themselves! And as a bonus, the second DVD contains several segments regarding Bill Belichick, Teddy Bruschi, Rodney Harrison, history of Foxboro Stadium & The Snow Bowl. For die hard pats fans this is 100% worth every penny!

2 Stars A passable history, but could be a whole lot better
Avid Patriots fans will snap this one up i’m sure. I enjoyed it, but was left feeling a little short-changed. I’m a lifelong fan of the team and it was fantastic to see the first half hour of this DVD. The old footage of Gino and Babe Parilli etc, playing before all those empty seats at Fenway in the days of the Boston Patriots. Priceless. It’s great to see this rare old footage, and its the reason i wanted to buy this DVD as soon as it came out. Unfortunately this was the only real highlight of the whole DVD. Where this DVD falls short for me is the brief run-through the 70’s and 80’s. These were very poor years for the team, with the exception of ‘76, ‘78 and ‘85. I will grant NFL films allowance for that. However, remember that this is what the team was. Poor! A bunch of no-hope failures. It was still our team, and we loved them regardless. The 85 season is not covered in too much detail, which is a shame as for most fans in their 30’s and ’40’s like me, this was a legendary season to remember. The only time the pats looked halfway decent in their history. This wild card on the road victory procession to the Super Bowl was only given a short look. Why? And where is the profile of great Pats legends and Pro Bowlers from this era, like John Hannah, Steve Nelson, Steve Grogan, Andre Tippet etc. ? Because they didn’t win a Super Bowl does that make them ineligible to be on this DVD?

Then we get on to another fairly brief look at the Parcells era, 96 and our second Super Bowl failure, then it’s all Belichick era for the remainder of the DVD. Of course its great to see the Super Bowl wins again, but if you own any other Pats DVDs, it’s nearly all stuff you’ve seen a hundred times before, and nothing new that you don’t have at home already. The DVD running time is over two hours, but around an hour and 25 minutes is just Belichick era pats. To be honest it left me a little bit disappointed as i wanted to see the full history, not just the most recent history of the franchise from 2002 to now. It’s like the Patriots didn’t really exist before we knocked off the Rams in XXXVI.

That said, there are some good extras on disc two that i guarantee a few of which you won’t have seen. Again though, if you have any other Pats DVDs, you’ll already have over half of them. It all adds up to a bit of a cash-in on old material that’s already been available on the market for years.

The Patriots deserved a little bit better. If you’re a new pats fan or don’t already own any other Pats DVDs from NFL Films, then this is really a great DVD. For the rest of us, you’ll have seen most of it before.

5 Stars Great DVD
I have not watched it in its entirety, but the first disc has great archival footage of the Patriots in their AFL days, and a lot of good information is provided. This is a must have for all Patriots fans. Buy it.

4 Stars This is Great!
Honestly, I have yet to see it! But hey, it is already a great idea to have a historical DVD for the team (and for all other teams too!) so I will give four stars just for the effort!

Maybe people now only know the Pats as a great team; or “the team to hate”; but guys like me have seen the bad old days, haha! So here, you will see the good, the bad and the ugly!

I would really want it to show Doug Flutie in the old uniform AND the new uniform! I bet he is the only guy that played for the Pats then and “now”!
